When I think of Christmas, I think about celebrating with my family and friends, giving gifts and indulging lots of food. There is also that part of me that can’t help feeling guilty when I think about all of the waste that is produced and what Christmas actually costs the Earth. So to combat against the environmentally neglectful and wasteful side of Christmas, I pledge to take positive action and have a sustainable and wildlife friendly Christmas, and here is how I’m going to do it!

On the first day of Christmas, I’ll give back to the Earth and gift my family with Gwent Wildlife Trust memberships 

On the second day of Christmas, I’ll give back to the Earth and hold a virtual Christmas party fundraiser and donate the funds to GWT's reserves appeal 

On the third day of Christmas, I’ll give back to the Earth by feeding birds with seeds from Vinehouse farm 

On the fourth day of Christmas, I’ll give back to the Earth by planting Christmas tree seeds. Sustainable Christmas tree options include locally grown Christmas trees with FSC certification, or why not rent a tree from a local grower who will put the tree back in the ground ready for next year.

On the fifth day of Christmas, I’ll give back to the Earth by using only plastic free decorations such as pine cones and holy.

On the sixth day of Christmas, I’ll give back to the Earth and use solar powered Christmas lights, on a timer, and be mindful of how light pollution can affect the local wildlife.

On the seventh day of Christmas, I’ll give back to the Earth by using eco-friendly materials to make handmade Christmas presents. I’ll also shop local and support small businesses in my community.

On the eighth day of Christmas, I’ll give back to the Earth by using only recyclable and biodegradable gift wrapping.

On the ninth day of Christmas, I’ll give back to the Earth by using plant based and biodegradable glitter.

On the tenth day of Christmas, I’ll give back to the Earth by using forest friendly and plantable Christmas cards.

On the eleventh day of Christmas, I’ll give back to the Earth by cooking a locally grown Christmas feast (plant based is even better)! I’ll be walking off my Christmas feast at one of my local GWT nature reserves.

On the twelfth day of Christmas, I’ll give back to the Earth and create left over food recipes. Don’t forget to use the green waste bins or make your own composting system. 

There are lots of ways to have a sustainable and wildlife friendly Christmas, and for me, knowing that I’m helping the Earth in my own little way makes Christmas much more joyful.
