Our magnificent old Small Leaved Lime Tree on our Nature Reserve at Prisk Wood, is vying for the title of Wales Tree of the Year.

The huge, pollarded ancient tree which sits above the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Penallt, near Trellech in Monmouthshire, is believed to be at least 300 years old. And, as well as its impressive age and appearance, it provides a welcome wildlife Bed and Breakfast service for a host of woodland creatures.
Gwent Wildlife Trust’s Woodland Conservation Officer Doug Lloyd said: “We are delighted that our old Small Leaved Lime Tree has been nominated for this year’s Wales Tree of the Year, as it plays a vital part in the ancient woodland life at our Prisk Wood Nature Reserve.
“Its magnificent pollarded limbs and crown produce many flowers for bees and other pollinators, it provides a place of rest and retreat for rare wildlife like Dormice and a food source for others including Great Spotted Woodpeckers.
“We appeal to everyone to vote for our Prisk Wood Lime Tree as this year’s Wales Tree of the Year.”
The Prisk Wood Lime Tree is one of seven from around Wales vying for the title of Wales Tree of the Year - an event organised by the Woodland Trust.

Recently, ‘Tree Hunter’ Rob McBride - a man who seeks out and celebrates trees around the country - visited our Wales Tree of the Year nominated Small Leaved Lime Tree.

Upon catching sight of the tree Rob’s response was: ‘Wow! wow! wow! – I’m so glad I came to visit and see this truly amazing old tree.”
