Water Quality Monitoring Citizen Scientist
We are seeking new volunteers to join our water quality monitoring program in the River Usk catchment. We are specifically looking to gather data on the following tributaries:
• River Clydach,
• Afon Lwyd in Blaenavon
• Pantyroes Brook
• Olway Brook
• Pill Brook
• Grwyney Fawr
Volunteers will have some flexibility in choosing sampling sites, however, the site should be local, publicly accessible, and allow for safe and easy access to the water all year round. The primary goal of the program is to collect reliable data in partnership with the Wye and Usk Foundation to address water quality challenges and biodiversity loss in the River Usk catchment. More details about the project can be found here.
The monitoring task will need to be carried out weekly, and volunteers can choose the days and times based on their schedules. The time spent on site may vary depending on site conditions and physical capabilities, but typically, sampling, taking readings, and making observations will take 30 minutes to 1 hour. Involvement in the program is voluntary, but regular sampling is crucial for the success of the citizen science program. No prior experience is necessary, as full training and testing equipment will be provided.
Volunteers will also be part of a monitoring group that can offer support and guidance. Sampling may be physically demanding based on weather and season, but it should never be done under unsafe conditions.
If you are interested in applying for this role, please contact our Senior River Restoration Officer Nathalie at nnicolaus@gwentwildlife.org
