STRATEGIC PRIORITY

Nature-based Solutions

People are working with nature to provide solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss.

Nature-based Solutions

Our world faces threats and challenges from the climate and ecological crises and from other social and economic challenges; including flooding, wildfires, droughts, extreme weather patterns, poor crop pollination, poor mental health and eco-anxiety. Through protecting, managing and restoring natural ecosystems we can address some of these challenges, simultaneously benefiting biodiversity and ourselves. We believe that if we look after nature then it will help look after us.

Part of the solution is for more people to recognise the importance of nature and healthy ecosystems in: improving the health of our communities; capturing carbon to reduce the excess in our atmosphere; providing spaces for wildlife to thrive; reducing/buffering the impacts of extreme weather events. Without public support and involvement, change will not happen. Some of the ways we are working towards this goal are:

  • Deliver and evaluate demonstration projects showcasing a range of natural solutions, for example peatland restoration or natural flood management, which educate and inspire people to take action themselves;
  • Build on our Wild Health project to support people to get closer to nature and improve their health and wellbeing;
  • Develop self-sustaining youth groups, educating and training them to take action to tackle the ecological and climate crises;
  • Develop ways to measure carbon sequestration, water storage, water quality, health and wellbeing.
  • Building on the foundation laid down by the Welsh Government’s Wellbeing of Future Generations Act, we will work with others to identify and overcome the barriers to engagement with nature and help ensure that everyone has the opportunity to experience wildlife at first hand, particularly in our most deprived areas;
  • Work to inspire educators and families to get passionate about experiencing and supporting nature, recognising the importance of getting children involved from an early age;
We all learned a lot about nature and felt revived. Thank you for being so welcoming and we will be going on further ‘expeditions’.
