Volunteer shepherd Pauline with Gwent Wildlife Trust's herd of Hereford cattle

Gwent Wildlife Trust is supported by an enthusiastic group of volunteers who help to make daily checks on a flock of sheep, and a small herd of Hereford cattle, on their Monmouthshire reserve at Penallt.

It is based on a flexible monthly rota, and we are always happy to sign up new volunteers, who can give as little as 1 hour per month of their time.

Training will be provided, though any budding shepherds must have a reasonable level of fitness as the job involves roaming the land to make sure the livestock are all accounted for and in good condition. This might include making sure sheep are not stuck in fences and hedges, and rounding up any strays. You will be expected to observe for any signs of illness or injury, and report back to the designated person as necessary.

Applicants need to be 18 or over. Public transport is available to Penallt but limited, so own transport is advised. Suitable clothing and footwear for all weathers is required.
